Tori tossed the yo-yo up into the air and caught it, "Do ya? I'll hold you to that," she said, holding out her yo-yo to him.
Tori felt that her nose had had ample time to dry up, so she removed the handkerchief and looked blankly at it, "Uh, I don't suppose you'll be wanting this back..." she said sheepishly to Tim. Flexing her hands, Tori seemed lost in thought for a moment, "Yeah, hurt pretty bad, but it comes with the territory I suppose." She rubbed the back of her head as she wondered how to word her next statement, "well, uh, y'see, pitbulls are kinda difficult sometimes, specially' the ones that've fought before, I dunno, I'll see what I can do alright?" she said with a shrug.

Jacob looked as if he had found the Holy Grail when Tori held out the yo-yo. His eyes widened and a genuine grin revealed itself. Holding both hands out he took it with reverence as if it were a holy artifact. "Wow, thanks! I'll have that trick done in one month, you can count on me!", he chuckled confidently. Almost immediately he slipped his finger though the threaded loop of the toy as he got a feel for the weight of the yo-yo. As it unraveled he began jerking the yo-yo in such a manner that it grew increasingly obvious he had no aptitude for the pass-time. Nonetheless he kept at it relatively ignorant of everything around him, perfecting his technique while locked away in his own world.

Alex couldn't help but laugh a bit at the conversation these two were having. He turned to Tim, who had been silent most of this time. He snapped his fingers close to his face, as if he were snapping him out of a trance, "Are you still there?" He asked, "I don't think I'll be playing anymore basketball today, but I would like to take a walk by the lake. Care to join me?" He asked in a friendly tone, doing a sweeping motion with his arm as if he were demonstrating something.

Tim had been spacing out after realizing that Tori was okay. The breeze felt just right as he looked off into the distance, staring at everything, yet nothing at the same time, his hand in his pocket. He felt the little pocket knife his mother had given him and he squeezed it slightly, wanting nothing more than to go back home. He gave a start as Alex snapped his fingers, and even reeled back as his thoughts were suddenly interrupted. "Sure," he said, trying to keep his voice casual, shrugging slightly. "Better not be trying to get me alone, though. I know I'm a looker, but I don't swing that way." He playfully flipped his hair, his voice practically dripping with sarcasm as a grin spread across his face. "Anyway, let's go." He playfully tapped Alex's arm and began swaggering over to the lake, trying to push his previous thoughts out of his head.

Tori waved goodbye to Tim and Alex, "Thanks for the help!" she barked after them.
She laughed uproariously at Jacob's sad attempts at yo-yo tricks. "Hey, hey, calm down dude, you'll break it," she said breathlessly. It took a few minutes, but Tori got a hold of his hand and stopped him, "Just chill out, try and throw it the same distance every time," she said encouragingly.

As he struggled to sync a rhythm with the sway of the yo-yo. It flailed about atypically. As Tori burst with laughter Jacob's brow burrowed and his lips shifted as he began to show signs of pouting. Jerking the yo-yo all the harder in his frustration his arm flinched as the girl almost delicately grasped his hand with her own. He listened to her words rather puzzled. The thought that there was something more to playing with a child's toy like this than simply flitting it around discouraged Jacob. He wound the string of the yo-yo before looking almost pensively at it. He tried unwinding the yo-yo with delicacy before it fell limply. Trying to be more gentle yielded less results then before. For a time Jacob repeated the cycle of winding the yo-yo's string and letting it fall with apparent ineptitude.

"Just flick your wrist, like you're cracking a whip, you hafta be quick for it work right," Tori explained, flicking her wrist in the same fashion as before. "It does take awhile, don't push yourself too hard." She watched closely over his fruitless attempts at making the lump of green plastic do his bidding, she crossed her arms and doubted that he would actually ask for help. It didn't matter either way, he was a funny kid.

Kenna smiled a bit wider and stood, hands folded behind her, rocking from her heels, to her toes, and back again. "I'm Kenna." She said simply. She then looked to the children that Maria pointed to originally, and pursed her lips, looking to her feet, then back to Maria. "You know... I might actually say hi to... Those guys." Kenna jerked her head in their direction slightly, the boys Maria suggested she see earlier. "One of 'em has a book. I forgot to bring my own book. Maybe he has more?" She giggled a little, then turned to them, looking back at Maria to smile and wave a hand to her, then take a deep breath and muster the courage that had built up in the last few minutes. Then, with a brave face, she started to walk over to the two boys. Pausing a few feet from them, she folded her hands behind her, and shuffled her feet a little, before speaking up. "Um... Hi." She said, smiling slightly, a nervous blush on her face.

During their heated discussion, Clement almost entirely missed the small girl to his other side as she approached, restraining a deep sigh at her presence. It wasn't her, really, he had just expected this place to be...more peaceful then it was. Sadly, this did not appear to be the case. Regaining his consciousness, Clement gave the girl a somewhat sincere smile. "Hey." With the simple greeting, he was tempted to go straight back to his chat about books with Thatch, but instead opted to give the girl a few more words of encouragement. She looked like she needed them. "You new too? We were talking about these." As he said so, Clement held up the book in his hands, almost like it was a trophy to show off, but all the same.

Thatch turned to look at the girl, and smiled shyly. "Ah, hey. Yeah, we're just talkin' about books. Do you like 'em?"
A lively conversation about books followed between the trio. After the introductions, time simply flew by as these children found out that they had much in common, despite their age differences. Clement, after Kenna shyly asked him, let her borrow one of his books, though he only brought three, himself.
Slowly but surely, as the kids and counselors spent the day playing, chatting and enjoying what truly was a beautiful summer afternoon, evening fell upon the camp. The sun was just about to go beyond the horizon, making the lake shine a bright, burning orange -- a sight which would anyone's attention. It was almost as if the lake was on fire, the flames dancing in harmony with the peaceful waves.
Tim and Alex found themselves sitting at a bench close to the archery range, overlooking the lake, providing quite the view. Both of them were quiet, almost in awe at the sight. They had been talking in a lively manner beforehand, however -- despite, or rather because of their many, many differences. It was much like debating, except a couple decibel above a rational speaking tone.
Tori continued to try and teach Jacob the noble art of yo-yo trickery, and with some success. It would seem that the young man was a fast learner. After a while, the two followed Tim and Alex's example, going for a walk, and ending up at one of the piers, sat down at it's edge, looking at the lake. Lively conversation echoed in the area, though mostly because of Jacob.
The trio had also turned their attention to the fiery beauty of the sun setting over the lake. Thatch looked to Clement and Kenna, smirking somewhat. "You know, books are great and all, but I still think there are even better things. This sunset is pretty awesome." The boy leant back, his legs hung off the pier, splashing quietly in the water. "This was fun, Clement, Kenna. Thanks for talking to me. I'm not very good at talking to new people..."
Time passed quickly as these people, whom had only just recently met one another, were already becoming fast friends. Or well, at least acquaintances. When the setting sun eventually dropped behind the horizon, the speakers set up all around the campsite broadcast a message.
"Aaaattention campers! Sports facilities and piers are being closed down! Return to the main campsite, or to your cabins! In two hours, you can come to the large campfire in the middle of the site for roasting marshmallows and sausages, as well as scaaa-aaary ghost stories! Be there, or be square!"
With a collective sigh, everyone returned to their respective cabins. To their surprise, they all found their cabins to be empty, except for themselves. Everyone else must've gone ahead to the main campsite. Not much preparation to be done for scary stories. Something caught each of their eyes, however.
On each of their bunks, and indeed -only- their bunks, rested a wooden mask. They looked old, and rather shoddily carved. They were completely plain, except for a pair of holes for their eyes. The wood used looked strange, almost gray in color, something none of them had seen before. It was a somewhat unsettling sight -- it was almost as if it had an ominous aura of some sort. Yet, in a strange way, it seemed to call to them, almost tempting each of them to look at the masks closer.

Tori ruffled Jacob's hair as she trotted off to her cabin, "Remember! Gravity is your friend!" she called after him. She reached her cabin and immediately flopped down on her bunk, an act she instantly regretted. With a surprised grunt, she pulled a funny-looking mask out from under her. "Huh, must be a camp thing," she thought to herself. She scratched her head in bewilderment, not sure what to make of it. Then, with a shrug, she lay it upon the bed beside her, "I'm probably supposed to wear it for the campfire thing," she said confidently. With that, she folded her hands behind her head in preparation for the two hours of relaxing she was about to do.

Walking back to his cabin, Clement let his mind wander over the events of the day for a moment. He didn't know that girl all that well...but he had promised himself he would try to make more friends, even if...even if it meant he had to loan his book to her. He prayed she took good care of it, knowing his luck he'd get a mass of paper soaked in the lake water tomorrow...but all the same. Clement began to think of what Thatch said, about the sunset. Sure, it was pretty...maybe he should think of things like that more often. He was never one to stop and smell the roses...for long at least, part of the reason he was here.
Shaking the swarm of thoughts from his head, Clement let out a sigh as he entered the cabin, as if bracing himself for a deep sea dive into annoying voice land. Instead, however, he was greeted with silence, and more over the strange gray mask laying near his bed. Thoughts of where he cabinmates, something he cared little about and was simply grateful for the silence, emptied his mind at the odd sight. The mask almost looked ancient, the craftsmanship obvious to him though he knew only a little of the subject. Picking up the thing and running a few fingers over the surface, Clement felt the chilly aura it gave off, the same aura that beckoned him to pick it up. Drawing it a bit closer to his face, Clement couldn't help himself, letting the curiosity get to him, and brought it fully up to his face for full inspection.

"And like I said, kids could use more... dis... ci... pline..." Alex said before trailing off as he noticed the empty cabin, "Are they all really going to that campfire?" He asked, walking around slowly and looking for any sign of life that wasn't him or Tim. His gaze eventually averted to the masks on his and Tim's beds.
Alex simply scoffed as he walked over to the mask, picking it up and inspecting it, "Perhaps they're playing some sort of prank?" Alex asked as he turned to Tim, holding the mask in a demonstrative manor. He couldn't shake it, but something was... drawing him to this mask. He wanted to put it on, but... what if it was a prank? Finally Alex simply sigh, 'Bloody hell, what do I care if they pull a prank?' He thought to himself as he lifted up the mask, and placed it on his face.

Tim just barely managed to stifle a laugh, holding the back of his hand to his mouth and passing it off as a cough. "It suits you," Tim said, his voice slightly shaky due to the pent up laughter. He walked over to his own bunk and picked up the mask, studying it. He ran a hand over it, feeling the cool texture of the mask pass under his palm. There was definitely something about this mask....but it could wait until later. He picked up the courier bag he had stashed under his bed and slipped the mask into it. Once everything was secure, he threw it over his shoulder and stretched, groaning in slight relief as he did so. "Wanna just head to the campfire, or would you like to play with your new toy?" Tim teased, sticking his hands in his pockets and leaning against the wall.

Kenna had the book pressed tight against her chest, a wide smile on her face. Her first camp friends! Maybe she'll get to sit by the camp fire with them! Oh, maybe she'll even get to play games with them tomorrow! Oh, what fun, what fun! Opening the door to her cabin, Kenna's smile turned upside-down. Didn't her cabin leader say that they would all go down to the camp fire together when it was time...? Was... Was she late? Oh no! She can't be late! Then she'd be all alone, and maybe get in trouble, and-- Kenna was in the middle of sorting through her things to get the appropriate clothes worthy of a camp fire, but she suddenly stopped in her tracks when she noticed the mask on her bed. Was... Was that part of the camp fire theme today...? Did everyone get these? Feeling somewhat nervous, she put the book down on her bed and reached for the mask. It looked like it was her size, but... It looked kind of boring to be a mask suited for scary-story time. Wait... Did they give her the boring mask on purpose? Did everyone else in her cabin, all the other girls, trade masks so that they all got the cool looking ones, and she got the boring one? With a long sigh and disappointed pout, Kenna put the mask on and picked Clement's book up again. It fit perfectly on her face; was shaped in all the right places, and was surprisingly comfortable. Running to the bathroom, she tip-toed to look in the mirror at herself. And, as was expected, she looked funny. Stupid mask, not being an awesome monster mask for scary-story time...
